Prayer Letters
Sept 15, 2007
Dear Friends and Family,We have some very exciting news to share with you. on Monday, September 10th our daughter, Samantha Denise Gutierrez was born!! She was born three weeks early, and below is the story of how we are reminded that God is always the One in control.
On Monday morning I was actually writing a newsletter about these last couple of months since returning to Nicaragua. A lot has happened in these months - we have been a part of planning an awesome surprise for Halle in having his family come down for his 50 th birthday, we have enjoyed two great teams helping us out in doing ministry at the sports center, and we have been more involved with the youth as they have taken a greater interest in continuing to develop the youth group. As I wrote that morning I reflected on the fact that in three weeks (which would have been October 1 st ) our little one was due. Thomas and I were very excited about starting a family but were also a bit concerned about our doctor and hospital situation. Since returning to Nicaragua in July, we realized that our Nicaraguan health insurance had been cut off since we had taken off so much time in doing our road trip. That part wasn't too bad since I was only 7 months pregnant; however, as the weeks passed we did not receive any insurance slips confirming that we had insurance again. I began to look for a private doctor just in case something happened or in case the insurance did not come through in time.
0n Thursday, September 6 th I was finally given an answer to our insurance situation. In Nicaragua for the national insurance to take effect is takes a full two months of being at your job. So as Thomas returned to work at the Nicaragua Christian Academy, he had to work all of August and September (the 15 days in July did not count as part of the two months) in order to receive insurance again. That meant that our insurance would start up again on October 1 st ! Once we understood the situation, we knew that we had to figure out something. So on Friday, September 7 th I went to a private clinic and saw a doctor that had been recommended to me by a friend. Everything was going well in my pregnancy and I was feeling good. We discussed prices for his being our doctor for the birth, but nothing was decided definitely.
On Monday, September 10th I awoke feeling fine and spent the morning working on scholarships and our newsletter. That afternoon at about 2 pm right before heading over to the sports center to open the computer lab, my water broke. Now at this point you have to remember that we have not set up anything with any hospital or doctor. I ended up calling the doctor I had seen on Friday, and he agreed to see me that afternoon. Since there were no contractions and infection was a concern, we agreed to a c-section, and within 2 hours I was in surgery. At 5:35 pm Samantha Denise Gutierrez was born. She is perfectly healthy, and I am recovering well.
We praise God for always being in control and for going ahead of us and working out the details of this whole situation!
Seeking Him for life,
