June 1, 2006

Dear Friends and Family,

We started this year off running with so many activities going on. But we also had some “little” struggles that can get to you after awhile. We returned from the States to find our house inundated with fleas. We also found out quickly that the water company was having some problems with debt or broken pumps, we’re still not sure which, and our water began to turn off daily at 9 am . We also acquired new neighbors upstairs, which was great except for the fact that they just couldn’t get used to our big Rottweiler, Benz. Well, I’m happy to say that the fleas are gone (that took a month), and I am super excited to say that we have had 5 days now of having water pretty much all day long (that took four months). As for the neighbors getting used to our dog, that hasn’t happened yet but maybe it doesn’t have to because….

The most exciting news that we have to share is that we might be buying land in the next month or so and building a home!!! We have been looking for land for the past year. We’ve looked at different houses for sale but have dreamt of buying our own piece of land and building a home. We have finally made an offer on a piece of land right across the street from the sports center. If all goes well over the next month, we will begin title transfers and once it is in our name, we can begin building!

At the sports center, the exciting news is that about a month ago we started a youth group on Friday nights. For a while we had been talking about the idea but never put it into action. So we finally picked a date and started it up one Friday night. Our idea is to reach out to the youth 15 and over. Our first evening, though, we had people from 2 to 50 years old. We played games out on the basketball court, and it was so fun to see the older guys and gals get really into the games and laugh hysterically. After games we bring everyone into the Ranchon and have a time of worship and then a message followed by snacks at the end. After four weeks we continue to have a group of about 30-40 youth, and our prayer is that they will continue to be involved and come to know Christ and His Good News for their lives.

Besides starting a youth group we have also stayed busy working with a number of short-term teams. For the first time ever we had a family team come down and hold an afternoon vacation Bible school. It was so much fun having kids 4 to 10 years old experiencing missions with their parents. One of the youngest gals wrote some of her thoughts after the trip: “Love just popped out of me, and I made new friends down there.” “Our team did some work too – we got to pull the weeds out!” “Now that I’m speaking Spanish I want to go back because I love my new friends down there.” It’s so awesome to read these words and just wonder at the impact that missions and seeing God work cross-culturally can do in our lives or the lives of our kids for that matter!

And last, but not least, this past month we officially opened our library and media center at El Salero, the sports center. Currently, we only have four computers out of eight working, but hopefully that will change soon. The kids from the neighborhood have thoroughly enjoyed playing on the computers though for many of them this is the first opportunity they have had to use a computer. They also enjoy playing board games like SORRY, reading books and drawing on coloring pages. In the future we are planning to build a second room that would be just the library and game room so that we will have a computer lab in which Thomas just might offer computer classes!

We hope each of you has exciting things happening in your lives!

Seeking Him for life,
Amanda y Thomas Gutierrez
