Scholarship Program Info
The scholarship program is currently in its 6th year of operation. Each year changes are made to develop the program more and to encourage children and youth to stay in school and continue their education. Unfortunately many youth drop out of school before 6th grade to start working. Our goal is to help change this. The school year in Nicaragua starts in February and goes through November with their “summer” break being December and January. When school is in session, students either attend in the morning (7am - 12 noon) or in the afternoon (1pm - 5:30pm). The scholarship program is divided into three different areas: backpack program, primary/secondary scholarships and university scholarships.
Backpack Program: This program provides backpacks and school supplies to children who are continuing their education by passing their grade level each year. For many families the cost of buying school supplies each year is a huge expense especially when families have more than one school aged child. A backpack includes 4-7 notebooks, a blank notebook for drawing, 2-3 pencils or pens, an eraser and sharpener, a ruler and a pair of scissors. In 2009, 520 backpacks filled with school supplies were given out. The cost per child is approximately $8.
Primary/Secondary Scholarships: These scholarships are primarily given to children attending small Christian schools throughout Managua or vocational schools. In 2009, 198 children were provided with scholarships. An average scholarship for the year is $75 though the range of scholarships is from $24 to $300.
University Scholarships: These scholarships are designed to cover the tuition of students studying at the university level. Many families find it nearly impossible for their children to go on to the university because of the great difference in cost. Providing youth with a scholarship allows them to study without worrying about how they will pay for classes. in 2009, 21 students received university scholarships. The range for these scholarships is from $60 to $450. There is always a need for more individuals that are interested in sponsoring a student.
